Our bones are the most clearly defined support system in the body, twice as strong as granite in withstanding compression and five times as light as steel. The beauty of bone is that it is malleable living tissue that is shaped and moulded by how we use and don’t use our bodies, and by all our movement practices including Yoga.
This workshop explores how to embody the support of our bones to create inner strength, ease and impeccable alignment in asana and vinyasa. We will investigate how our bones ‘talk’ to one another through our joints, and how they relate to muscles, connective tissues and other body systems. We will examine how bones dance with our breath and the forces of gravity travelling through them. A particular emphasis of this teaching is the yoga of svādhyāya or self-inquiry. Learn how to create a more conscious conversation and feel a whole new body unfold in your awareness.
‘Embodiment is the act of awakening and enlivening the consciousness of our whole being’.
Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen
‘When we practice yoga from an interior perspective, the body becomes mindful, the mind becomes embodied.’ Donna Farhi
The workshop will focus practically on how to maintain a calm spine and happy joints in standing poses, forward bending, back bending, twisting and transitions. We will explore the intricate relationships from the head to the tail, from the feet to the pelvis and the hands to the shoulders. Along the way, we will troubleshoot and repattern any issues in the spine, pelvis, hips, feet, knees, wrists, elbows and shoulders. Understanding and embodying our internal pathways and functional range of movement creates intelligent asana, structural integrity, refined posture, strength, flexibility, and better balance.
The workshop will include a supporting handout, short lectures, visual materials, embodied anatomy explorations and guided movement enquiry as well as yoga asana and vinyasa. It is suitable for suitable for students from all streams of yoga with over one year’s practice. Students with postural issues, hyperkyphosis, hyperlordosis, sacral, back, neck, feet, knee, elbow or shoulder issues, joint problems, hypermobility or hypomobility are welcome. Curious cats and anatomy geeks will feel very much at home. Bring an open mind, a cheerful heart and a big smile.
